
The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou celebrated the 78th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence with a distinguished event that brought together prominent Chinese partners, business leaders, and the vibrant Sri Lankan community across Southern China. Held under the theme “Rebuild Sri Lanka,” the occasion stood out for its strategic focus on enhancing bilateral trade and economic collaboration, with Sri Lanka’s premium export portfolio at the forefront.
The event unfolded in an atmosphere that masterfully blended Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage with a modern showcase of its dynamic export economy. Guests were invited to experience the diversity and excellence of Sri Lanka’s products, highlighting the nation’s commitment to strengthening its commercial ties with China.
The formal proceedings commenced with the hoisting of Sri Lanka’s National Flag, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. A solemn Two Minutes of Silence was observed in tribute to the heroes who sacrificed for the country’s independence. The event also reflected Sri Lanka’s cherished pluralism, with representatives from four major faiths offering blessings for peace, prosperity, and harmony for Sri Lanka and its people worldwide.
Messages from Sri Lanka’s President, Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism were read, marking the significance of the day and the enduring ties between Sri Lanka and its global partners.
Consul General Lashinka Dammullage addressed the gathering, underscoring the deep and long-standing friendship between Sri Lanka and China. "As we celebrate 78 years of independence, this is a moment to reflect on the partnerships that drive our progress," she said. "The bond we share with China is one of our most treasured. Through the premium products displayed today, we are reaffirming that Sri Lanka is not only a country of rich culture and natural beauty but also a reliable and innovative trade partner, poised to contribute to a shared economic future."
The Consul General also expressed profound gratitude for China’s unwavering support during challenging times, acknowledging the swift assistance in the form of financial aid, essential relief supplies, and contributions from humanitarian and business partners.
"Today, our partnership with China goes far beyond aid," she continued. "It spans investment, infrastructure, tourism, education, innovation, and cultural exchange—truly a relationship founded on mutual respect and shared aspirations."
Looking to the future, Consul General Dammullage highlighted a significant milestone on the horizon: 2027 will mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and China. "We look forward to celebrating this important anniversary in a way that honors the strength, trust, and promise of our enduring partnership," she added.
Consul General extended a warm invitation to the people and business community of Guangdong Province and beyond, emphasizing Sri Lanka’s active efforts to expand exports, promote domestic products in China, and position the island as a premier destination for Chinese travelers and investors.
Guests were treated to an exquisite array of Sri Lankan cuisine, showcasing the island’s world-class agricultural products. From dishes infused with the warmth of authentic cinnamon and spices to the delicate notes of freshly brewed Ceylon Tea, the culinary offerings highlighted the exceptional quality and versatility of Sri Lanka’s agricultural exports.
A dedicated exhibition area allowed attendees to explore a curated selection of Sri Lanka’s renowned exports, including Ceylon Tea, gems and jewellery, spices, and an array of food and beverage products, all while learning about Sri Lanka’s rich economic potential.
The event concluded on a vibrant note, with a captivating performance of “Surabha Valliya,” a traditional Sri Lankan dance that encapsulated the island’s cultural richness and artistic traditions. The performance added a colorful and festive layer to the event, leaving a lasting impression on all in attendance.
