ILFOV CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY STRENGTHENS ECONOMIC TIES WITH SRI LANKA

The Ilfov Chamber of Commerce and Industry, chaired by its President Dan Dumitru, hosted the Sri Lankan delegation at its headquarters, in a key move to boost bilateral trade and economic cooperation between Romania and Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan delegation, headed by Ambassador Madurika Joseph Weninger, included President of the Sri Lanka Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs (COYLE) S. Manjula Wijesundera, COYLE members, and the Attaché  of the Embassy. They engaged in discussions focused on strengthening trade relations, facilitating private-sector partnerships, and identifying new opportunities for mutual economic growth.

As a key outcome of the meeting, both parties agreed on the preparation and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU will serve as a framework for promoting mutual investment, facilitating import and export activities, and supporting joint ventures between businesses in both countries. The agreement will cover a broad range of sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, logistics, and services.

Ilfov County plays a vital role in Romania’s economy. Located on the periphery of Bucharest, Ilfov is the most developed and most populous county in the country, with over 540,000 residents, including a growing expatriate community. The county is known for its vibrant industrial base, including automotive parts manufacturing, IT and electronics, logistics, food processing, and construction materials. Its strategic location encircling the capital city makes it a critical hub for trade and transportation.

During the meeting, Dumitru and Wijesundera also engaged in a productive dialogue with the Chairman of COYLE, focusing on priority trade sectors. Notably, inquiries were made regarding the import of approximately 500 all-season radial bus tyres, suitable for both traction and steering, as well as pneumatic car tyres. Additionally, there was strong interest in importing premium Ceylon tea, signaling further trade potential.

Subsequently, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Romania hosted an Open Ceylon Tea House at its premises. The event welcomed interested Romanian entrepreneurs, including representatives from Ilfov County, who had expressed a clear interest in importing premium Ceylon tea. The Tea House served as an informal networking platform, allowing guests to sample and learn more about the rich variety and heritage of Sri Lankan tea.

As a next step, a Romanian business delegation is scheduled to undertake an official visit to Sri Lanka next year to explore investment opportunities and solidify potential business partnerships.
