
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brussels along with ‘SL Cricketers in Belgium’ organised the first ever Ambassador’s Cup 2025, six-a-side softball cricket tournament on 23 August 2025 at Wemmel Cricket ground in Brussels, Belgium, with the participation of
the Sri Lankan community.
The main aim of the tournament was to strengthen relations among the Sri Lankan community in Belgium and move forward by unlocking barriers in connecting people. Six cricket teams representing both Sinhala and Tamil Sri Lankan Community participated in the cricket tournament transcending the message of unity and togetherness in the spirit of Cricket – the sport which is loved by all Sri Lankans.
The ceremony was inaugurated with the lightening of the traditional oil lamp and the singing of the national anthem both in Sinhala and Tamil languages. While welcoming the cricket teams and guests, the Ambassador highlighted how the spirit of the game of cricket has contributed to mark Sri Lanka on the global map. ‘’For many Sri Lankans Cricket is like their religion and a subculture which helps to relate, respect and unite within the social fabric of Sri Lanka’’, Ambassador further added. The ambassador thereafter tossed the coin for the first match of the tournament and thanked all players for their commendable sportsmanship reflected during the tournament.
The team F led by Thanushan defeated team B led by Mukunthan, both from the Antwerp region, in a tight match and won the Ambassador’s Cup 2025. Both trophies for the best bowler and the best batsman were seized by Thanushan and Raginthan respectively from the winning team. Man of the Series was Nushanthan from the runners-up. A friendly women’s cricket match also added colour to the event.
The President and the Officer Bearers of SL Cricketers in Belgium, the coordinators of the Tamil community and the supporters of the Sri Lankan community in Belgium, played an instrumental role and contributed to the success of the tournament.
The spectators witnessed thrilling performances as six teams battled for first ever Ambassador’s Cup 2025, while enjoying their day with fellow Sri Lankan families.
