Authentic Sri Lankan flavors offered to Singaporean Food Lovers

 

A Sri Lankan Food Festival was held at the Line restaurant, Shangri-La, Singapore from 27 February to 2 March 2025 to mark the 77th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka and the 55th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Singapore.

High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Singapore Senarath Dissanayake, Non-Resident High Commissioner of Singapore to Sri Lanka S. Chandra Das, a pioneer entrepreneur of Sri Lankan origin Sunil Amarasuriya and the Resident Manager of Shangri La Singapore Yusuf Yaran, inaugurated the event on 27 February 2025.

High Commissioner Dissanayake thanked Shangri-La Singapore for the support extended during his inaugural speech. He stated that, given Sri Lanka’s long history and tradition, the Sri Lankan cuisine has been shaped by many historical and cultural factors. The High Commissioner invited everyone to savor an unforgettable culinary experience and enjoy Sri Lankan dance and culture at the festival and visit Sri Lanka for more.

Vice President of the Singapore Press Club Bhagman Singh who visited Sri Lanka in November 2024 as a member of the Singapore Press Club delegation, shared his experiences in Sri Lanka with the gathering. He made references to the food, culture and hospitality of the Sri Lankan people.

The members of the diplomatic corps, senior Singapore government officials, members of the Singapore Press Club, tour operators, and other invited guests attended the event.

The performance made by Channa-Upuli Performing Arts Foundation was another highlight of the event. In addition, videos and slideshows showcasing the natural beauty and the cultural diversity of Sri Lanka were displayed. The Line restaurant was decorated with flags from the nine provinces of Sri Lanka and flyers containing historical and scenic tourist attractions.

Two experienced Sri Lankan chefs were specially flown from Colombo Shangri- La to prepare the Sri Lankan dishes, providing an opportunity for Singaporean food lovers to experience authentic Sri Lankan taste. The delicacies included an assortment of Sri Lankan specialties, including hoppers, kottu-roti, ambul-thiyal and wattalappam, among others.
