Sri Lankan expatriate communities celebrate 77th anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka across Canada

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa and the Honorary Consulates of Sri Lanka in Canada, together with the Sri Lankan expatriate communities celebrated the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka.

Independence Day events were organized by Honorary Consulates of Sri Lanka in Montreal, Quebec and Winnipeg, Manitoba, with the active participation of Sri Lankan associations and Sri Lankan origin Canadians and residents.

In the Atlantic Region, the Sri Lanka Welfare Association Canada (SLC Voice) organized its first Independence Day celebrations in the Atlantic Region, with the support of the High Commission. The highlight of the event was the raising of the Sri Lankan flag at the Fredericton Parliament Building and the event featured cultural performances, messages of dignitaries, and traditional cuisine.  Deputy Minister of Tourism, Heritage, and Culture, the Government of New Brunswick, Shannon Wilson and President, Multicultural Association of Fredericton, Bin Zhang attended the event.

Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Montreal, Chanaka Kurera held a solemn event on 04 February 2025, to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Independence, which was graced by High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Canada, U. L. Mohammed Jauhar, along with Counsellor of the High Commission, Kumarasamy Kiritharan. At the event, religious leaders representing many faiths blessed Sri Lanka and Sri Lankans residing across the world. Members of the Sri Lankan community enthusiastically participated in the event with their Canadian friends.

The Sri Lankan Seniors Manitoba (SLSM), together with Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Winnipeg, Mohamed Ismath organized a commemorative event at the Whyte Ridge Community Centre featuring cultural events, and a presentation on the history of the country that captivated the audience. Messages of President Anura Kumara Disanayak and High Commissioner Mohammed Jauhar were read out at the event. The celebration helped foster unity among Sinhala and Tamil-speaking communities.

Held with the assistance of the High Commission of Sri Lanka, the celebrations brought together many Sri Lankan organizations and communities across Canada and showcased Sri Lanka’s rich history and cultural heritage, while reaffirming the nation’s values of unity and diversity.
