77th anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka celebrated in Guangzhou

The Consulate-General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou, in commemoration of the 77th anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka, organized a flag hoisting ceremony on 04 February 2025 at the Garden Hotel, Guangzhou with the participation of the Sri Lankan community and friends of Sri Lanka in South China.

The ceremony also included multi-faith religious observances to invoke blessings on the country and the people, and observing of a two-minute silence in tribute to the national heroes for their sacrifices and contributions to the motherland. The Independence Day messages of the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka were also read out to the gathering.

Drawing attention to this year’s Independence Day theme - “Let Us Unite for National Revival”, Consul General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou, Suranga Algewatte in his speech, called upon fellow Sri Lankans to work in unison and contribute to the collective beginning of a new era of revival and take part in building a modern and prosperous Sri Lanka.

The Consul General also highlighted the beginning of a new chapter of Sri Lanka-China relations, following the recent state visit of President Anura Kumara Disanayaka to China that has further solidified bilateral partnership, bringing fresh momentum to key areas of mutual cooperation. In this context, he also urged the Sri Lankan community and Chinese partners in Southern China to continue playing an active role in Sri Lanka’s development initiatives, with a special emphasis on the Government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” programme.

The event also featured a brief segment of traditional dance performances by Sri Lankan students in Guangzhou showcasing Sri Lanka’s cultural richness. Moreover, tourism promotion video presentations were screened, encouraging Chinese travellers to visit Sri Lanka this year, which in turn will further strengthen the bonds between the people of the two countries, while also boosting the economy of Sri Lanka.

Attendees were treated to a Sri Lankan meal at the end of the ceremony.
