In a splendid display of camaraderie and cultural richness, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Ethiopia hosted a diplomatic dinner reception on 04 of February 2025 to commemorate the 77th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence Day at Best Western Plus Hotel in Addis Ababa.The gathering brought together distinguished officials of the government of Ethiopia, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Commission of the African Union (AUC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the business establishments in Ethiopia, the members of the Sri Lankan community in Ethiopia, together with media representatives, and friends of Sri Lanka who are united in a spirit of friendship and mutual respect.
The festivities commenced with the stirring melodies of the National Anthems of Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and the African Union while all invited guests stood rising in honour. The Sri Lankan National Anthem was performed in both Sinhala and Tamil, celebrating the vibrant tapestry of Sri Lanka's heritage.
Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka, K.K. Theshantha Kumarasiri, delivered welcome remarks highlighting the historical ties between Sri Lanka and Ethiopia, the establishment of formal diplomatic relations and the subsequent deepening of these connections across various sectors. Further, Ambassador Kumarasiri emphasized that in numerous multilateral forums, Sri Lanka and Ethiopia have consistently found common ground on global issues of mutual importance, reinforcing the need for collaboration in addressing challenges that affect both countries.
He also highlighted that the newly elected government of Sri Lanka has demonstrated its firm commitment to economic reforms and upholding democracy. The Ambassador emphasized that in just a short time, the government has laid a solid foundation for transparent and rules-based structural reforms in view of ensuring long-term sustainability. He elaborated that the newly introduced National Digital Strategy aims to play a critical role in aligning Sri Lanka with the global digital economy while enhancing the capacity for innovation and growth.
Moreover, drawing the attention of the audience to the newly introduced “Clean Sri Lanka" national programme, Ambassador Kumarasiri outlined that this initiative aims to promote a culture of cleanliness and behavioural changes in every sectors of the country.
On behalf of the Government of Ethiopia, , Director-General for Middle Eastern, Asian, and Pacific Countries Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, the guest of honour, Ambassador Negus Kebede Kassaw extended a warm message of congratulations on the celebration of the 77th Anniversary of Sri Lanka's Independence. Ambassador Kassaw acknowledged the strong ties between Sri Lanka and Ethiopia, emphasizing the importance of their shared history and mutual respect. He highlighted the potential for further collaboration across various sectors, including trade, hospitality, cultural exchanges and people-to-people contacts. Ambassador Kassaw stressed the need for further expanding the economic diplomacy initiatives between the two countries.
He reflected solidarity in working together to address common challenges and to explore new opportunities for partnership, expressing optimism for the future and reaffirming the belief that continued cooperation would benefit both countries and their people. Ambassador Kassaw accordingly invited more and more business establishments to commence and expand trade, commercial, and investment partnerships between the two countries.
A highlight of the evening was the enchanting cake-cutting ceremony, customized with Sri Lankan and Ethiopian National flags. The ceremony of cake cutting was graced by the presence of Ambassadors, representatives of Intergovernmental and International organizations in Ethiopia.
The guests indulged in a culinary journey featuring an array of traditional dishes, including aromatic curries, fragrant rice, and an assortment of delectable appetizers, and deserts methodically prepared by the culinary experts at Best Western Plus with the support of the staff of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Ethiopia. Complementing the meal was the renowned Ceylon tea in different flavours, served to perfection from start to end, allowing guests to experience a true taste of Sri Lanka.
Attendees were also surprised by a raffle draw, sponsored by the Best Western Plus Hotel, featuring an array of prizes, including rejuvenating spa experiences, delightful dinners, and a luxurious weekend stay with breakfast for two.
At the end, guests were requested to carry back home a token of appreciation-a delightful packet of the world-renowned Ceylon tea, a cherished symbol for participation and support. This thoughtful gesture summed up the spirit of hospitality and celebration of the pleasant commemoration of Sri Lanka’s Independence Day.
