The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington D.C. hosted a modest celebration on 04 February 2025 to commemorate the 77th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence at the Sri Lanka Residence bringing together U.S. officials, Sri Lankan diaspora, and friends of Sri Lanka to honour the nation’s journey since independence and its continued commitment to peace and prosperity under the theme of “Towards a National Renaissance.”
The ceremony commenced with the solemn hoisting of the National Flag by Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States Mahinda Samarasinghe, accompanied by the resonant sound of traditional Sri Lankan ‘Magul Bera’. Guests gathered around the flagpole, fostering an atmosphere of reverence and patriotism, followed by the rendition of the national anthem of Sri Lanka in Sinhala.
Following the flag hoisting, a multi-faith religious observance was held, reflecting Sri Lanka’s rich spiritual heritage. Religious leaders from the Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, and Islamic communities offered prayers for peace, unity, and continued prosperity of Sri Lanka. Chief Judicial Prelate of North America Ven. Katugastota Uparatana Nayaka Thero, along with other Buddhist priests, Ven. Karaputugala Indrarathana Thero, Ven. Thanthirimale Mahanama Thero, Ven. Wathuliyadde Rathanaseeha Thero, and Ven. Mahagama Suwineetha Thero invoked blessings in accordance with Buddhist traditions. Swami Shankaran Sivacharyar, Imam Refai Arefin and Reverend Monsignor John Paul Pedrera offered blessings consistent with Hindu, Islamic, and Christian rituals, respectively.
In his address, Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe underscored Sri Lanka's resilience and progress towards rapid economic recovery. He emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining economic stability and rural upliftment and expressed gratitude to the United States for its steadfast support for Sri Lanka at the most needed of times. The Ambassador expressed his desire to work closely with the US administration in order to further strengthen bilateral relations leading to continued prosperity and progress of both countries.
Ambassador Samarasinghe made the point that the President and the Government of Sri Lanka have been given a clear mandate by the people of Sri Lanka to undertake a systems change leading towards transparent and accountable governance, the eradication of corruption, and the fostering of national unity amongst all Sri Lankans. The Ambassador went on to say that given the mandate received by the government from all corners of the country namely the North, South, East and West that, this could be Sri Lanka’s last chance to forge a true Sri Lankan identity amongst its diverse population, leading towards sustained prosperity and stability of the country.
Representing the U.S. government the most Senior Bureau Official for South and Central Asian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State Eric Meyer extended his congratulations to Sri Lanka on the celebration of its 77th National Independence Day. Mr. Meyer reaffirmed the commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations and acknowledged the continued support provided by the United States toward Sri Lanka’s development and economic recovery.
Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for South and Central Asian Affairs at the National Security Council Ricky Gill represented the White House at the event. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for South and Southeast Asia Dr. Andrew Byers, along with senior officials from the Department of State and representatives from USAID were also in attendance. Additionally, Secretary of State District of Columbia Kimberly A. Bassett conveyed the congratulatory message of the Mayor of the Nation’s Capital Muriel Bowser.
Deputy Chief of Mission, Rohana Ambgolla read the National Day Message of the President of Sri Lanka during the event.
In a moment of collective reflection, attendees observed a two-minute silence to honour the national heroes who fought for Sri Lanka’s freedom and independence, serving as a solemn tribute to their sacrifices for the nation’s sovereignty and peace.
The ceremony concluded with the playing of the National Anthem in Tamil, celebrating Sri Lanka’s cultural and linguistic diversity. Guests were then invited to partake in refreshments featuring a variety of traditional Sri Lankan delicacies and Ceylon Tea, showcasing the island nation’s rich culinary and cultural heritage. The Embassy extends heartfelt appreciation to all who attended and contributed to making this celebration a memorable occasion.
