77th anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka commemorated in Singapore

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore commemorated the 77th anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka with a flag-hoisting ceremony on 04 February 2025 at the SEAMEO Regional Language Centre (RELC) auditorium. The event was attended by over 200 members of the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Singapore including migrant workers and friends of Sri Lanka.

The formal ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka by High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Singapore, Senarath Dissanayake, followed by the singing of the national anthem. A two-minute silence was observed in honour of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Ven. Buddhist Monks and religious dignitaries of the Hindu, Islamic, and Catholic faiths conducted religious observances, invoking blessings on the Government and the people of Sri Lanka.

The Independence Day messages of the President, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism of Sri Lanka were read out at the ceremony and copies of the messages were made available in all three languages for the attendees.

Delivering his remarks, High Commissioner Dissanayake emphasized the significance of this year’s Independence Day theme - “Let’s Rally for National Renaissance,” calling on all Sri Lankans to unite in their collective commitment to rebuilding the nation with renewed determination, resilience, and optimism. He highlighted the new government’s key priorities with a focus on eradicating poverty, embracing digital transformation, and fostering lasting sociocultural changes under social, environmental and ethical aspects through the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative.

The ceremony also featured a presentation on the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, offering the audience an overview of the government’s vision for environmental restoration and social responsibility. Further, a promotional desk arranged at the venue offering insights into the country’s diverse travel destinations attracted the interest of the attendees.

The event was conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English and concluded with the playing of the National Anthem in Tamil, reflecting Sri Lanka’s linguistic and cultural diversity. Following the formal proceedings, attendees were treated to a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast.
