The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jakarta celebrated the 77th anniversary of independence of Sri Lanka on 04 February 2025. Held at the Embassy premises, the event saw the participation of Sri Lankan professionals, students, and Indonesian well-wishers.
The event commenced with the hoisting of the national flag of Sri Lanka by Chargé d’ Affaires (a.i.) of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jakarta, Nilanthi K. Pelawaththage, followed by the singing of the national anthems of Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Priests representing Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam invoked blessings upon the Government and the people of Sri Lanka.
During the event, the national day message of President Anura Kumara Disanayaka was read out in Sinhala and Tamil by Embassy officials.
Chargé d’Affaires (a.i.) Nilanthi K. Pelawaththage highlighted the key milestones and challenges of post-independence Sri Lanka through a visual presentation. She also emphasized the presence of Sri Lankan companies in Indonesia as exemplary contributors to the economic diplomacy of the country.
In commemoration of the 77th anniversary of independence, three individuals who played significant roles in strengthening diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Indonesia were recognized: President of the Association of Sri Lankans Living in Indonesia (ASLI), Lasitha Senanayake, for fostering harmony among the Sri Lankan community; Chairperson of Theravada Wanitha Indonesia (WANDANI), Wenny Lo, for promoting Sri Lanka as a tourist destination and General Manager (Manufacturing) of MAS Holdings in Indonesia, Chandana Bandara, for enhancing economic ties between Sri Lanka and Indonesia through a USD 52 million investment, creating 5,500 employment opportunities for Indonesians.
More than 100 attendees added color and vibrancy to the event, and the celebration concluded with the serving of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.
