Embassy of Sri Lanka in Qatar conducts mobile service and awareness programme for Sri Lankan workers

 

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Qatar, in collaboration with the Arab Qatari, Co. for Poultry Production in Qatar, successfully conducted a mobile service and awareness programme for Sri Lankan workers in Qatar. The initiative aimed to provide essential consular services and raise awareness of important topics related to labor rights, welfare, and legal matters.

The programme, held at Arab Qatari, Co. for Poultry Production in Doha on 31 January 2025, was attended by a large number of Sri Lankan expatriates working in various sectors. Services offered during the programme included registration at the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment and renewals of the registration, consular documentation, and labour-related assistance. Additionally, informative sessions were conducted on workers’ rights, Qatar’s labour laws, and health and safety measures to ensure the well-being of the Sri Lankan workforce.

The programme was conducted by the officials of the Embassy under the guidance of Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the State of Qatar, Sithara Khan Azard who highlighted the significance of such initiatives in promoting the services provided to the Sri Lankan workers by the Government of Sri Lanka.

During the programme, Counsellor- Employment & Welfare of the Embassy stated “Our workers are a vital part of Sri Lanka’s economy, and their well-being remains our top priority. This mobile service ensures that they have access to crucial consular and legal support, helping them navigate their professional and personal lives in Qatar with confidence”.

The programme also included interactive sessions featuring video presentations on the services rendered by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) including the scholarship programme, the pension scheme, loan schemes, reintegration programmes, medical camps for family members, benefits of  insurance coverage for death or injuries of the worker, and housing projects, etc. In addition, the mandatory requirement of the registration at SLBFE was highlighted. The workers who attended the event voiced their concerns and received guidance on various matters affecting their employment and daily lives.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to continuously support its expatriate community through similar outreach programmes and services in the coming months.
