Construction work on mega housing scheme for government servants inaugurated

Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa on Thursday inaugurated construction work of a mega housing scheme meant for government servants at Pelangasthuduwa in Borella.

This 21 storied housing complex consisting of 608 housing units is to be completed in three years. Professionals who have over 10 years service in the public sector can apply for houses in this scheme. Government employees with 15 years service who do not have their own house are entitled to a house in this project.

Housing units at this housing complex are put up in two categories. The housing units that come under the first category have a space of 650 square feet with three bedrooms, living area, kitchen and attached bathrooms and costs Rs. 7.7 million.

The second category consists of houses with a space of 800 square feet with three bedrooms, living area, kitchen and attached bathroom. The cost of a housing unit is Rs. 8.9 million.

Infrastructure facilities such as roads and landscaping in the vicinity will also be carried out in keeping with the international standards.

A greenery area, children's park and a playground are also to be constructed close to the housing scheme.

The housing scheme which is estimated to cost Rs. 4,449 million is constructed in a UDA land in extent of over two acres.

The Government led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as part of its venture to convert Colombo city as the commercial capital of Sri Lanka has started shifting public buildings to Sri Jayawardenapura, Kotte, which is the administrative capital.

The objective of this process is to ease congestion in the city and create a conducive environment for the promotion of commercial activity.

The Urban Development Authority is also striving to ensure better living standards for the people by initiating mega housing complexes with all basic amenities.

UDA Chairman Nimal Perera, Director General Harshan De Silva, Additonal Director General Brigadier Samantha Jayasundera, Urban Resurgence Project Director Brigadier Ranjith Samaasinghe were also present.
