77th National Independence Day of Sri Lanka celebrated in Stockholm

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Sweden celebrated the national independence day of Sri Lanka on 04 February 2025 at the Embassy in Stockholm.

The ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp and the hoisting of the national flag by the Ambassador. This was followed by the rendition of the National Anthem in both Sinhala and Tamil, symbolizing unity and respect for the country's diversity. A two-minute silence in tribute to the national heroes, honoring their sacrifices and contributions to the nation followed.

Religious observances were conducted by religious dignitaries from the Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and Christian faiths, who offered prayers for the peace and prosperity of the nation, followed by reading of the National Independence Day messages of President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath.

Speaking to the gathering, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Sweden Kapila Fonseka emphasized the strengthened relations between Sri Lanka and Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, and Iceland, despite the challenges faced by the country in recent years. The Ambassador also shared details of the government’s flagship initiative, 'Clean Sri Lanka,' while urging Sri Lankans in Sweden and the Scandinavian and Baltic regions to support this new initiative and contribute to the country's ongoing development process.

The vibrant event featured a specially choreographed dance and a singing performance by Sri Lankan children, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents.

The event was attended by the Sri Lankan community in Sweden, representatives from Sri Lankan associations, Swedish friends of Sri Lanka, and other well-wishers.
