The United Nations Association (UNA), with the assistance of the Ministry of External Affairs and the United Nations in Sri Lanka, organised the National Observance of the 69th United Nations Day at the Bishop’s College Auditorium recently.
External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris was the event’s Chief Guest while the Coordinator of the United Nations Subinay Nandi was the guest of honour.
Awards and certificates were presented to the winners of the best study circle, general knowledge and speech contests and art competition among the UNA study circle in schools in Sri Lanka.
Certificates and awards were also presented to the Best Teacher in Charge of the UNA Study Circles Contest.
The Best Speaker award was received by Ravindu Rasanjana of Sri Chandrasekara Maha Vidyalaya, Panadura while Assistant Secretary General UNA M.M.M. Rushanudeen received a token of appreciation for volunteer service from the President of the UNA Dr. Lakshman Marasinghe.
Cultural items were presented by Ladies’ College, OKI International School and Asian International School students.
European Union Ambassador David Daly, High Commissioner of Canada Shelley Whiting, Brigadier General G.V. Elapata, A.H.M. Azwer MP, Consul General of Sri Lanka in Los Angeles Dr. Hector Weerasinghe, members of the UNA and teachers and students were present at the ceremony.
