The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu celebrated Sri Lanka’s 67th National Day on 4th February 2015. It was held at the Embassy premises with the hoisting of the national flag by Ambassador W. M. Senevirathna and singing the national anthem followed by the lighting of traditional oil lamp.
A two minute silence was observed in honour of all the national heroes who have sacrificed their lives for the country. The Sri Lankan community in Nepal participated in this event. Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Senevirathna emphasised the important role of Sri Lankan expatriates towards their Motherland and explained the new Government’s policy on development as well as bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Nepal.
Multi-religious observances were conducted by Most Ven. Dr. Gnanapurnika Maha Thero-Deputy Sanga Nayaka of Nepal- Buddhist, Pandit Hem Sharma-Hindu, Imam Md.Maulana Iqbal-Islamic and Dr. Simon Pandey-Christian.
National Day messages of His Excellency, Maithripala Sirisena, the President, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Prime Minister and Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka were also read. An alms giving (Dhana) was organized at the Official Residence for the Mahasanga who were present at the event. At the end of the event, traditional refreshments were served to the gathering.
A reception was organized to commemorate the 67th National Day of Sri Lanka at Hotel Soaltee Crowne Plaza, Kathmandu on 5th February, 2015 evening. Senior political leaders of Nepal, senior Cabinet members, former Chairman of the Council of Ministers-Hon. Khil Raj Regmi, Ambassadors and members of the Diplomatic Corps, members of the business community, members of the Nepal-Sri Lanka Friendship Association, Nepal-Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce and media personnel were present on the occasion.
Rt. Hon. Pramanand Jha, Vice-President of Nepal graced the event as the Chief Guest. About 300 invitees participated at this function.
