The 66th National Day of Sri Lanka was celebrated in Islamabad, Pakistan by the Sri Lankan community and friends of Sri Lanka in Pakistan as well as the representatives of the diplomatic corps, Government, business and academia on 04th February 2014.
An official ceremony took place in the chancery with the hoisting of the national flag and the singing of national anthem in the early morning of 04th February. This was followed by the religious observances from the religious leaders representing the four religions in Sri Lanka. The members of the Sri Lankan community and friends of Sri Lanka in Islamabad, joined by the staff of the High Commission of Sri Lanka participated in this event, which was addressed by High Commissioner Air Chief Marshal Jayalath Weerakkody. Reading out the message of His Excellency President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the occasion of the 66th National Day, High Commissioner Air Chief Marshal Jayalath Weerakkody outlined the progress achieved by the Government in addressing the multi-faceted challenges and in leading the country towards peace and prosperity.
An evening reception took place on the same day, followed by a programme featuring diverse cultural aspects of Sri Lanka including Sri Lankan music and videos in the backdrop of an exhibition of photographs. Federal Minister for Port and Shipping Hon. Kamran Michael and Federal Minister of Railway Hon. Khawaja Saad Rafique were among the guest. A large gathering of Diplomats based in Islamabad officials, representatives of international organizations, trade and tourism sectors, academia and friends of Sri Lanka attended the event.
