The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok celebrated the 66th anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka on 4th February 2014 with the participation of Hon. Governor of Sri Ayutthaya Province of Thailand, a large number of expatriate Sri Lankan community members living in Thailand and well-wishers.
The auspicious ceremony commenced with the Ambassador hoisting the National Flag amidst playing of Magul Bera at the official residence. A two-minute silence was observed in honour of all war heroes who laid their lives to preserve and protect the freedom, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the motherland.
The religious observances were conducted by the respective religious leaders representing Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Muslim religions while blessing the country and the people.
The Ambassador in his welcome speech highlighted the developments in the bilateral relations in the fields of cultural, religious, trade and tourism between Thailand and Sri Lanka particularly due to recent high level visits from Thailand to Sri Lanka and vice versa. The Ambassador also explained the potential investment opportunities in Sri Lanka under the prevailing conducive environment with the eradication of terrorism in 2009 under the leadership of H.E. the President.
The National Day messages of H.E. the President, Hon. Prime Minister and Hon. Minister of External Affairs were read out in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages respectively.
The dignitaries were entertained to a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast after the ceremony.
