On February 4th, The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brussels marked the 66th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka at a solemn event attended by a large number of Sri Lankans- Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burgers and others, representing the multiethnic and multi cultural society in Sri Lanka, along with many friends and well-wishers of Sri Lanka in Belgium.
The programme was commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Ambassador P.M. Amza, amidst magul bera, and the gathering joined in signing the national anthem thereafter. After observing two minutes silence in commemorating the sons and daughters of Sri Lanka, who have sacrificed their lives for the independence, sovereignty and dignity of mother Lanka, the traditional oil lamp was lit by the Ambassador, the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Antwerp, and other participants representing the Sri Lankan community. Ven. Murungasyaye Gnanissara Maha Nayaka Thero and the religious dignitaries invoked blessing in accordance with the four main religions, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam, that co-exists in Sri Lanka peacefully for centuries.
The participants had the opportunity to watch the televised speech of H.E Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka to the nation, on the Independence Day celebrations held in Kegalle, Sri Lanka. Addressing the gathering, Ambassador P.M. Amza, elaborated on the developments in Sri Lanka and the relations with Belgium and the European Union, during the past years. Echoing what H.E. the President stated, that "bitter memories should be written on sand as they get wiped away. Good experiences should be etched on stone to be remembered forever", the Ambassador reiterated the importance of preserving the unity and freedom that every Sri Lankan is now enjoying. The gathering also joined for a reception arranged by the Embassy.
