The Sri Lanka Consulate General in Mumbai represented Sri Lanka for the first time at the Expo 2011, held on the sidelines of the Second Global Economic Summit 2011, at the World Centre in Mumbai from 27 - 29 January, 2011.
The Expo 2011 was organized by the All India Association of Industries with the support of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry of India and the Government of Maharashtra.

The Economic summit laid special emphasis on Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) and the vital role played by the latter in the economy. Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Pakistan, Nepal, Uzbekistan were among the exhibitors at the Expo. Participants from over 30 countries showcased their manufacturing and services industries at the event. The Summit and the Expo were an ideal platform for the participants to have closer interactions with their business counterparts from around the globe. Delegates also had the opportunity to explore new business opportunities and network with India’s leading state and private sector stake holders in various sectors including Food Processing, Agriculture, Biotech, and Energy, Engineering and other Trade and Service industries. The three day event attracted more than 50,000 visitors to the World Trade Center in Mumbai.
The event comprised of B2B meetings presenting an opportunity to interact with desirable business partners to strengthen their business ties through joint ventures. State Government Officials from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Trade Promotion Organizations from the other states created a cohesive relationship between all prospective partners.
The Consulate operated its country stand throughout the Expo attracting over 500 visitors in total. It promoted Sri Lanka as an emerging business destination in Asia by providing information on the current phase of economic development in the island and the opportunities available for foreign investors in various fields including tourism, agriculture, energy, health, construction, infrastructure development etc. It was observed that leading Indian entrepreneurs were enthusiastic about the positive development in Sri Lanka in the area of economic recovery.
During the Expo, the Mission made arrangements to disseminate information related to procedures on setting up business operations in Sri Lanka, tax incentives offered, benefits under the free trade agreement between Sri Lanka and India etc for prospective businessmen who visited the Sri Lanka stand.
In addition, the concept of “Visit Sri Lanka 2011” was highlighted in the country stand by providing in-depth information on major tourism destinations in Sri Lanka for the Indian and other foreign visitors, visa procedures, hotel facilities, internal transport, food, etc. Furthermore, information booklets on “Sri Lanka tourism” were made available for the visitors.
Ceylon Tea Promotion counter was a major attraction of the Sri Lanka stand and provided an opportunity for the visitors to enjoy the flavour of the pure Ceylon tea. The main focus of the Ceylon Tea counter was to promote the specialty teas of Sri Lanka, together with its health values as a natural beverage.
Sri Lanka’s participation at Expo 2011 in Mumbai afforded an opportunity to showcase the potential SME industry sector and contemporary tourist attractions of the country.
