Sri Lanka’s 67th Independence Day was celebrated in Cuba on 04th February 2015 at two high profile events organized by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Havana. The official ceremony that took place at the Embassy chancery commenced at 10 am with the flag hoisting amid Magulbera, followed by recital of the national anthem, lighting of the oil lamp, observance of 2 - minutes silence in memory of national heroes, reading out national day messages of the President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Sarath Dissanayake welcomed the guests and appreciated their active support and cooperation for the promotion of Sri Lanka’s interest and Sri Lanka - Cuba relations. While elaborating on the progressive steps taken by the new government under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena to usher in a new era of peace, unity and harmony, the Ambassador requested all those present to do their duty by the motherland in making the Government’s vision a reality. A Sri Lankan buffet and traditional dishes were served on the occasion.
That evening the Ambassador and staff hosted a Reception at the Official Residence at which the Minister of Education of Cuba, Ena Elsa Velazquez Cobiella was the Chief Guest accompanied by the Deputy Foreign Minister, Ana Teresita Gonzalez Fraga. There were more than 300 guests in attendance, including over 75 Ambassadors and a host of Cuban dignitaries. The proceedings began with the playing of the Cuban and Sri Lankan national anthems followed by the Ambassador’s speech in which he emphasized the significance of the multi – sectoral programmes launched by President Maithripala Sirisena and the unity Government to build a united and prosperous Sri Lanka for all. Speaking on Sri Lanka - Cuba relations, he said the bilateral discussions that took place between the two presidents in June 2104 and that of the foreign ministers in September 2014, paved the way for closer ties and cooperation in a range of fields of mutual interest. The Ambassador also lauded Cuba’s achievements in education, health, science, technology, sports etc and was appreciative of Cuba’s consistent support and goodwill to Sri Lanka bilaterally and at international for a. The speech made in Spanish was well received by the audience.
The screening of a documentary on Sri Lanka featuring its, history, culture, fauna, flora, tourist spots etc was a major attraction. The guests were treated to an array of Sri Lankan cocktails, snacks and sweetmeats at the reception.
