Latin America & The Caribbean Division
The Latin America & the Caribbean Division is tasked with coordinating matters connected with Sri Lanka’s bilateral relations with 33 countries in the Latin American and the Caribbean region, that includes Central and South America. (Mexico, Central America: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua & Panama; The Caribbean: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago. South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay & Venezuela). The Division, through 4 Sri Lankan Diplomatic Missions located in the US (Washington, New York) Cuba (Havana) and Brazil (Brasilia), monitors the political and socio-economic developments in the respective countries and countries of concurrent accreditation.
Sri Lanka’s resident bilateral representation in Latin America & the Caribbean consist of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil and the Sri Lanka Embassy in Havana, Cuba.
The Division is engaged in facilitating a robust relationship with the countries in the Latin America & the Caribbean encompassing the entire gamut of Sri Lanka’s relations through several mechanisms/ tasks/ programmes, inter alia, incoming and outgoing high level and official visits, Annual Partnership dialogues. The Division serves as the first point of contact for communication with resident Missions of Latin American countries based in Colombo on bilateral matters. The tasks include coordination and taking forward initiatives in partnership with line agencies of the Government of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Missions overseas and, where necessary, with the resident Diplomatic Missions in Colombo.
