The birthday of the two young Sri Lankan elephants Gajaba and Sugala was celebrated in the Seoul Grand Park at a Sri Lanka Cultural Evening on Saturday 11 June 2016. The event was organized by the Seoul Grand Park in association with the Sri Lanka Embassy in the Republic of Korea and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau. The two elephants sampled their favourite fruit including banana, apple and water melon on their special day.

The programme included a performance of Sri Lankan dance and music, display of Sri Lanka tourism attractions, Sri Lankan food and Ceylon tea. Korean children participated in an elephant drawing competition organized by the Seoul Grand Park. The objective of the event was to share the many facets of Sri Lankan culture with Korean visitors to the Seoul Grand Park, including children.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in the Republic of Korea Manisha Gunasekera welcomed the celebration which represents the strong bonds of friendship between Sri Lanka and Korea. The Ambassador also invited the Korean people who gathered for the occasion to visit Sri Lanka to see more wildlife, as well as the many other attractions of the beautiful island.

Director of the Seoul Grand Park Song Chun-Hun and his team welcomed the event and elaborated on the progress of Gajaba and Sugala since their arrival at the Seoul Grand Park in 2010. Media personnel and a large number of Korean visitors including children attended the event.  Gajaba and Sugala were gifted by the Sri Lankan Government in 2010.Â
