Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Audrey Azoulay, concluded her visit to Sri Lanka on 20 July 2024.
Director General Azoulay attended the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Membership of UNESCO at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre on 16 July 2024 which included the launch of the Commemorative Publication. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, First Lady Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe and Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha were among the distinguished guests.
Ms. Azoulay visited the University of Peradeniya where she unveiled a plaque marking the declaration of the Mahawansa as a document of world heritage on UNESCO’s Memory of the World International Register and planted a tree to mark the 75th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s membership of UNESCO at the Peradeniya Botanical Garden.
Ms. Azoulay travelled to the UNESCO World Heritage sites; including the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the Sri Maha Bodhiya and monuments including the Ruwanweli Maha Seya, in Anuradhapura.
During her visit Director-General Azoulay called on President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha and Actg. Minister of Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya.
