Marking the Tripitakabhivandana Week declared by the Government, a solemn programme was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today (22). The Tripitakabhivandana week was declared from 16 to 23 March 2019 in conjunction with the national process to inscribe the Theravada Tripitaka in the Memory of the World Register under UNESCO.
The programme commenced in the morning with the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs taking the 'oath on the importance of inscribing the Theravada Tripitaka in the Memory of the World Register'. This was followed by a Dhamma discourse delivered by Ven. Olande Ananda Thero on the relevance of the Tripitaka.
Members of the Colombo-based diplomatic corps, including several Heads of Mission, and the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the Dhamma discourse.
In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated a number of events organized by Sri Lanka Missions overseas around the globe to mark the Tripitakabhivandana Week, supporting national endeavours to inscribe the Theravada Tripitaka in the Memory of the World Register.
President Maithripala Sirisena proclaimed the Theravada Tripitaka as a National Heritage of Sri Lanka on 05 January 2019. A national process is now underway to inscribe it in the Memory of the World Register, under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.
