The Mourning of Brutal Incidents on the 21st April, 2019

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Egypt observed two minutes silence on the 22nd of April, 2019 before commencing work for the day.  A notice was issued regarding the opening of a Condolence Book at the Embassy on 23rd April, 2019.  The National Flag was flown at half mast.

A large number of Ambassadors, Diplomats and general public called over at the Embassy to sign the Condolence Book.   We received several letters of condolence and support from several persons including His Excellency Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of Arab Republic of Egypt, H. E. Dr. Hany Selim, the Ambassador/Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Asian Affairs, Msgr. Bruno Musaro, His Eminent Apostolic Nuncio,    Mr. Hassan Said Badrawi, Economist/Chairman of Foreign Relations Committee, Ambassadors, Diplomats, and Travel Agencies.

On the 26th April, 2019, a Catholic Religious Service was held at the St. Joseph’s Church in Zamalek, Cairo officiated by Fr. John Korriks.  The Sri Lankan Community attended the service from all religious backgrounds.  The Service was followed by lighting candles in memory of those who had departed due to the incidents.

The Service was conducted simultaneously in English and Sinhala with the assistance of the Sri Lankan Community and pre-arranged assistance of Fr. Sunil de Silva from the Arch-Bishop’s House in Colombo.

On the 03rd of May, 2019, there was a Joint Religious Programme conducted by Buddhist Priest; Ven. Kumaraalle Chandawimala Thero over Skype followed by conferring of merits on those who lost their lives with “Pan Wadeema”.

This was followed by a Christian Service conducted by Fr. Viraj Eranga to bless the departed souls.  Following Sri Lanka tradition, the participants both the Embassy Staff and the members of the Sri Lankan Community distributed dry rations to the poor Egyptians as means of conferring merit on the departed.
