The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome celebrates Thai Pongal

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome celebrated Thai Pongal on 16 January 2024 at the Embassy premises.

The Sri Lankan community along with the Ambassador and the staff of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome prepared the traditional pongal and a Pooja to invoke the blessings of the sun and mother nature. Deputy Chief of Mission of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Rome Ratnasingam Kohularangan officiated the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Italy Jagath Wellawatte extended his best wishes to the Hindu Tamil community living and working in Italy and thanked all the attendees for being part of the celebration.

The Ambassador also stated that Thai Pongal offers renewed aspirations and welcomes new opportunities with unwavering optimism and highlighted the importance of committing positively towards the economic growth of the country.

Thai Pongal is a vibrant Hindu harvest festival that signifies productivity, prosperity and the happiness of being grateful to those who contributed to the harvest. The festival is one of the foremost religious and cultural festivals celebrated by the Tamil community across the globe.
