58 Students from St. Bridget’s Convent in Colombo participated in the Pathumthani University Sport Tournament with Thai students which were held from 28 November – 01 December 2023 at Samkhok School Pathumthani in Thailand.
St. Bridget’s Convent team won the Netball Championship under 17 and became Runners Up in Baseball under 16 and Netball under 19.
Ambassador of Sri Lanka and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, C.A. Chaminda I. Colonne joined the Opening Ceremony of PTU Tournament Thailand 2023 which was inaugurated by Governor of Pathumthani Pol. Lt. Gen. Kamronwit Thoopkrajang on 28 November 2023.
During her speech, Ambassador & Permanent Representative to UNESCAP stated that “Sports are significant part of Sri Lankan culture. Although volleyball is the national sport of Sri Lanka, Cricket, Rugby, water - sports, badminton, athletics, football, basketball and tennis are also popular among Sri Lankans. Sri Lanka’s schools and colleges regularly organize sports and athletics teams from provincial to national levels. Winning the Cricket World Cup in 1996 and being runners up twice thereafter have taken Sri Lanka to greater heights as a world champion in Cricket. Sri Lanka first participated at the Olympic Games in 1948 and Sri Lankan athletes have won a total of two Olympic silver medals, both in athletics. Sri Lankans have won many awards at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, Asian Games and South Asian Games bringing honour to the country”.
Vice President of Pathumthani University Asst. Prof. Dr. Nithima Yuenyong, Staff of the Pathumthani University, Chairman of the Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleagues & Universities Dr. Maurice K. Dimmock, Director of Sports, Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka Upali Amarathunga also joined the event.
