Sri Lanka’s 75th Independence Day commemorated in Brussels

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Belgium celebrated the 75th Independence Day of Sri Lanka in Brussels at the official residence of the Ambassador with the participation of the Sri Lankan community in Belgium on February 04, 2023. The Independence Day commemoration commenced with the hoisting of the national flag by Ambassador Grace Asirwatham, followed by the singing of the national anthem. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of all those who had sacrificed their lives in the service of the country. Multi-religious observances were conducted by Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, and Islamic religious leaders. Independence Day messages issued to Sri Lankans abroad by the President, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister were read at the event.

Ambassador Asirwatham, in her address to the Sri Lankan community, said that the President of Sri Lanka has clearly outlined his vision for the country, which extends all the way to 2048, the centennial of our independence, in the direction of building a prosperous nation for the benefit of the younger generation. While informing the Sri Lankan community of what the Embassy has been doing to contribute to the revival of the economy and renewed economic advancement in Sri Lanka, Ambassador Asirwatham urged the Sri Lankan community to participate in economic development-related activities in Sri Lanka in order to build a prosperous nation.

The program ended with the singing of the national anthem of Sri Lanka in Tamil. Traditional Sri Lankan milk rice and Ceylon tea were served to the guests.
