Sri Lankans in Israel safe: Dilan

Sri Lankans would not be permitted travel to Libya for employment and job agencies have been instructed not to recruit Sri Lankans for employment there.

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) is in constant touch with the Sri Lankan mission in TelAviv on the safety of some 7,000 Sri Lankans working there.

getimagForeign Employment and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera yesterday assured that the workers would be immediately evacuated if and when there was a threat to their safety and security.

Sporadic missile and ground attacks between Israel forces and Hamas militias in Gaza Strip and Palestine during the past two weeks had killed nearly 500 civilians with the majority of them being Palestinians.

The minister said the Sri Lankans employed in Israel were safe and the SLFBFE was closely monitoring the situation. He said 14 Sri Lankans displaced from Libya were evacuated and brought to Dubai on Friday with the assistance of the Sri Lankan mission in Cairo, Egypt. They were expected to arrive home yesterday.

Commenting on the confusion over t he payment of pension to Sri Lankans employed in South Korea, he said there was no change to the payment of pensions to Sri Lankan employees and they could obtain their pensions based on their pension contribution when they leave South Korea after their period of employment.
