Sri Lankan marathon runner Velu Krishanthini came in fourth place in the SCO Kunming International Marathon (women’s category) held on 31st December 2017 in Kunming, China. The marathon was organized by the Shanghai Corporation Organization (SCO) and the Yunnan Provincial Government under the theme “Happy Running in Spring City – closer – nearer and more harmonious”.

First and second places of the marathon were won by China, while Belarus won the third place. V. Krishanthini, hailing from Nuwara Eliya, finished the marathon with a time of 3:00:17, barely a minute behind Olga Kaminskaya of Belarus who recorded a time of 2:59:10. Despite severe winter weather conditions, Krishanthini was leading in the first half of the 42 km marathon before being overtaken by the runners from China and Belarus.

1469 runners completed the women’s full marathon with participants from 27 countries, including runners from China, South and South East Asia, Central Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. The first eight women runners were awarded with prize money and medals.
