The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Berlin, in association with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Sri Lanka Association in Berlin participated at the annual Karnevel der Kulturen 2019 (Carnival of Cultures), held in Berlin from 7-10 June 2019. Sri Lanka set up a stall at the carnival, displaying Sri Lankan identity and unique culture and throughout the four days, the Sri Lank Army cultural troop performed, attracting hundreds of people.
The street parade, held on 9 June 2019, marked the peak of the Carnival, where Sri Lanka Army Cultural troop, together with Sri Dance group, Berlin, performed traditional Sri Lankan dances. Sri Lankan parade was warmly welcomed by a large number of spectators, gathered along the street. The colourful truck was decorated with sculptures of a Sri Lankan elephant and an elegant peacock, along with Sri Lankan traditional art.
Reaching out to the public by participating at the Carnival and the publicity received by media are viable opportunities to send a message to the mass audience of Germany and neighbouring countries of the Sri Lankan culture and tradition, which will in return, directly impact on boosting tourism. Promotion materials, including leaflets, Sri Lankan key tags and caps on the theme ‘So Sri Lanka’, were distributed among the spectators randomly.
