Sri Lanka invited for Daily Securities Market opening by Singapore Exchange (SGX)

Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore was invited to the Singapore Exchanges’ symbolic securities market open ceremony on 27 November 2019 as part of its 20th Anniversary Celebrations this year.  High Commissioner Sashikala Premawardhane was joined by CEO of Singapore Exchange (SGX) Loh Boon Chye to mark the start of the trading day by striking the gong.

Speaking at the occasion, the High Commissioner stated that Sri Lanka is rapidly consolidating its status as a country on the rise, characterised by considerable growth potential with an increasingly diversified and resilient economy. Following the recent election of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, progressive reforms have been proposed aimed at achieving a GDP growth rate of 6.5% or higher during the 2020-2025 period, she added. The High Commissioner urged investors to make full use of the opportunities present as Sri Lanka embarks on an era that promises stability, continuity and inclusive growth. Investors based in Singapore have invested in and trusted Sri Lankan companies throughout the years as leading investors in our capital markets.

Mr. Loh Boon Chye stated that the SGX hopes to welcome more issuers from Sri Lanka and looks forward to being a strong platform for capital raising, and a strong business partner for Sri Lankan companies expanding their businesses globally. The Singapore Exchange (SGX) is a preferred listing venue for international bonds by Sri Lankan issuers. To date, SGX has listed 26 bonds by 6 Sri Lankan issuers with over US$ 20 billion amount issued.

The CEO of the Colombo Stock Exchange Rajeeva Bandaranaike and Singapore’s non-resident High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Chandra Das were also present at the event.
