The 67th Independence Day of Sri Lanka was celebrated at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing on Tuesday, 4th February 2015 with the participation of the Sri Lankan community and Chinese well wishers.
The ceremony began with hoisting of the National Flag followed by the singing of the National Anthem, lighting of the traditional oil lamp and religious observances conducted by Buddhist, Hindu, Catholic and Muslim dignitaries to bless the occasion and the country.
The National Day Message of the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs were read out in Sinhala, Tamil and English.
The Ambassador, addressing the gathering gave an overview of the current developments in Sri Lanka, following the election of the new Government and expressed confidence that the people of Sri Lanka will continue to enjoy peace, stability and sustainable development under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The Ambassador recalled the time tested friendly relationship between Sri Lanka and China, which has been upgraded recently to a Strategic Cooperative Partnership and said that the new Government of Sri Lanka will strive hand to take the bilateral relations to greater heights. The Ambassador also sought the support and cooperation of the expatriate community in China to make the new government’s people - friendly initiatives a great success.
The 67th Independence Day ceremony included a cultural programme performed by children of the Embassy staff, followed by a luncheon hosted by the Ambassador at the official Residence.
