Sri Lanka Delegation meet IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano during the General Conference

The Delegation of Sri Lanka attending the 61st General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) met with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano on 20th September 2017 at the International Centre in Vienna.

The delegation led by Mrs. Priyanee Wijesekara, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Vienna also included Mr K.V.L.T. Jayawardhana, Chairman, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, Dr. Saman Hewamana, Chairman, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council, Mr. H.L. Anil Ranjith, Director General, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council, Mr V. A. Waduge, Director General, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, and officials from the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board and the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna.

At the outset, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka congratulated Director General Yukiya Amano on his re-election to the office for a third term. Director General Amano stated that he intends to visit Sri Lanka in March 2018, and Ambassador Wijesekara responded that Sri Lanka looks forward to the visit.

Mr. Anil Ranjith, Director General of Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council briefed Mr. Amano regarding the status of Additional Protocol to the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, and the developments on the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM). He also apprised the IAEA Director General of the developments pertaining to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management & on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management and its Amendment. Mr. Ranjith sought IAEA assistance in organizing national workshops to educate stakeholders in this regard.

Mr. K.V.L.T. Jayawardhana, Chairman, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board briefed the IAEA Director General on the ongoing promotional activities and sought IAEA assistance to establish a radiopharmaceutical production facility based on cyclotron in Sri Lanka. He also explored the possibility of obtaining IAEA’s assistance in exploring quality drinking water resources in chronic kidney disease (CKD) prevalent areas in Sri Lanka through tracer technology / isotope hydrology technique.
