Sri Lanka Defence team visits Indonesia

A Sri Lanka Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) delegation comprising eighteen officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force headed by the Chief of Instructor – Navy Wing, Commander AAP Liyanage undertook an overseas study tour to Jakarta and Bandung cities in Indonesia from 13 to 23 August 2014.

During the study tour, the delegation visited Indonesia’s National Armed Forces Headquarters and the Army, Air Force and Navy Command and Staff Colleges.  The delegation visited a weapon and armour vehicle manufacturer, PT. PINDAD and an aerospace manufacturer, PT. Dirgantara Indonesia, in Bandung.  During the tour, the delegation also visited the Tangkuban Perahu Volcano and the Taman Safari Park.

The delegation received a warm welcome by the military institutions of Indonesia.  During the visit, they participated in lively discussions with their Indonesian counterparts on various current issues such as the South China Sea Conflict, Indian Ocean issues as well as discussions on academic curricula.  Indonesian counterparts were full of praise for the Sri Lankan armed forces for their success in defeating terrorism.  They also discussed the latest developments regarding the rehabilitation programmes for ex-combatants and the role of the Government of Sri Lanka and the military in the post conflict phases.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Anoja Wijesekera hosted a dinner for the delegation the day before their departure to Sri Lanka. The head of the delegation, Commander Liyanage said that the study tour was very useful in terms of information sharing and learning from Indonesia.
