Sri Lanka would send another Peace Keeping Regiment to Haiti in November under a United Nations Peace Keeping Programme, Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Media Director Jayanath Jayaweera said yesterday.

He said the regiment would include 54 Army officers and 708 other rankers; two Navy officers and 42 other rankers and two Air Force officers and 42 other rankers. This is the 20th peace keeping mission of the SLA.

“The officials will leave for Haiti on November 13 and 18 after the passing out ceremony at the Wijeyaba Infantry Regiment Headquarters in Kurunegala, under the patronage of Maj. Gen. Jagath Dias,” Mr. Jayaweera said.

He said the officers were selected from the five infantry regiments of the Army, Navy and the Air Force on the basis of their seniority in service.

The first Sri Lankan peace keeping regiment was sent to Congo in 1962.
