The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kuwait together with the Sri Lankan community organized many events, which include hoisting the National Flag, a cultural event, a blood donation campaign, a sports tournament and an exhibition, in connection with the 72nd Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka.
The flag hoisting ceremony was held at the embassy premises with the participation of a large gathering on 4 February. The programme consisted of rendition of the national anthem, a two minutes’ silence to honour all those who sacrificed their lives for the motherland, lighting of the traditional oil lamp, multi religious observances and the reading out of the National Day messages of the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Relations.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Mohammed Jauhar emphasized the need of working steadfastly together, in order to achieve economic freedom, by enhancing trade and economic relations between Sri Lanka and other countries. He enumerated the measures that the Embassy would take to boost bilateral trade and tourism and investment from Kuwait. The Ambassador quoted from the national policy framework of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour”.
Minister of Public Works and State Minister for Housing Affairs of the State of Kuwait Dr. Rana Abdullah Al Fares graced as the Chief Guest of the reception that the Mission hosted for diplomats, Kuwait Government officials, business community and the Sri Lankans, at the Radisson Blu hotel on 6 February 2020. While addressing the gathering at the reception, Ambassador Mohammed Jauhar said that bilateral economic and trade relations are strengthening further and termed the recent signing of an MOU between the trade chambers of both countries, with the objective of promoting trade, technical and economic cooperation, as a step in the right direction. Sri Lankan traditional dances were performed at the event by the students of the dancing academies. Sri Lankan Tea was served and tourism promotional brochures were distributed.
The Society of All Sri Lankans in Kuwait (SLK), with the assistance of the Embassy, organized volleyball and cricket tournaments to celebrate the 72nd Anniversary of Independence and the awarding ceremony was held with the participation of the Ambassador as Chief Guest. A blood donation campaign also to mark the Anniversary was organized by the ‘’Saylanese Helping Hands-Kuwait”. The Director of the Blood Bank commended the Embassy and the ’Saylanese Helping Hands-Kuwait for the charitable gesture by Sri Lankans to commemorate the National Day. The Embassy assisted the Islamic Presentation Committee of Kuwait also to organize an exhibition to celebrate the 72nd Anniversary of Independence, which was attended by many Sri Lankans and Kuwait nationals. Ceylon tea sachets were distributed to all participants.
