The Security Forces have been closely monitoring the aftermath of the lifting of the ban imposed on the LTTE by the European Union, Army Media Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said.

He was addressing the weekly Defence media briefing at the Defence and Urban Development Ministry Media Centre in Colombo yesterday. Brigadier Wanigasooriya said state and military intelligence units will be vigilant following the situation created by the lifting of the LTTE ban by the European Union since these units are involved in the onerous task of national security.

He said the ban will have an impact on national security since the lifting creates a small amount of room for the revival of the LTTE.

"However, the ban is temporary and we think it will not be permanent as it will have a huge impact on the peaceful atmosphere in the country," Brigadier Wanigasooriya said.

Asked by a journalist if the Security Forces are collecting details of citizens in the Northern Province, he said "no such thing had been undertaken". While flatly rejecting those allegations levelled against the Security Forces, he said that there is no need to collect data in that manner since this data is already available with the Grama Niladari.
