Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the Ministry of Justice to sign extradition agreements with Sri Lanka, according to a statement published on Russia’s official website of legal information on Wednesday.
The treaty with Sri Lanka involves the transfer of convicts to imprisonment.
According to the Sri Lankan government an Extradition Treaty with Russia would enable Sri Lanka to request for the extradition of persons of concern who have engaged in illegal acts in the country and sought refuge in Russia, for criminal prosecution or execution of sentences.
Documents will be signed as soon as agreement is reached, and the Russian Ministry of Justice has the right to make nonessential changes in the project approved by the federal government, RIA Novosti reported.
Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers earlier this month gave approval to sign the treaty between the two countries.
The Russian President also has instructed to sign an extradition treaty with Laos which involves the transfer of a wanted person for prosecution or execution of sentence at the request of the second state.
According to the website of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, Russia currently have bilateral extradition agreements with nearly 30 countries, including such Asian countries on the list as China, India, Mongolia, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Vietnam.
