Possible cooperation with Government of Palau on employment opportunities and other sectors

Ambassador Peter Adelbai of Palau in Tokyo called on Ambassador E Rodney M Perera and engaged in a productive discussion with the intention of exploring the potential of sourcing migrant labor from Sri Lanka for employment in various sectors in Palau, particularly in the service, construction, and agriculture sectors.

The meeting shed light on the current labour situation in Palau and the requirement for sourcing foreign employees and the possibility of collaborating with Sri Lanka in a mutually beneficial partnership.

The Director of the Bureau of Development under the Ministry of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism & Development of Palau, Raymond August who joined the Palauan Ambassador expressed keen interest in the potential of establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Palau and Sri Lanka in this regard. This MOU would facilitate interested Sri Lankan workers to apply for employment opportunities in Palau. The assistance of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Tokyo was sought to initiate contacts with the relevant authorities in Sri Lanka. Ambassador Perera, welcoming the proposals, agreed to discuss with relevant stakeholders in Sri Lanka to explore the request further.

In addition, Ambassador Adelbai expressed his interest for Palauan nationals to explore opportunities for studying law in Sri Lanka. He also expressed a desire to develop expertise in the legal and accounting sectors, animal husbandry and poultry farming, with the support from Sri Lanka. Noting that a significant portion of food items are currently imported to Palau, Ambassador Adelbai also emphasized the importance of strengthening the agricultural sector and looked for possible collaborations.

Ambassador Perera expressed hope that with the support of both Capitals, the Embassies of Sri Lanka and Palau in Tokyo will be able to establish close links in coming days.
