The Police have begun recording statements with regard to the mass grave in Kaluwanchikudy suspected to contain the remains of Muslims killed by the LTTE. Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the statements of 27 family members of Muslims reported missing during the time the LTTE was highly active in that area, were recorded last week. The Police spokesman said the statements will be used to help identify the remains when the grave is excavated next month based on a court order.

The grave was to have been excavated last week but it was postponed on a court order. The Police spokesman said that since the human remains will not be identifiable, the Police will use the statements of the relatives of the victims to try and identify the remains through their belongings which may have also been buried at the site.

According to a complaint lodged with the Police in April this year, about 100 Muslims killed by the LTTE are believed to have been buried at this location. The Police said that a man identified as Abdul Mohammad had in April filed a Police complaint regarding the mass grave. Nearly 100 Muslims are believed to have been killed by the LTTE in 1990 in Kaththankudi on separate occasions.

It is alleged that the bodies were later buried in Kaluwanchikudy near the beach, according to the complaint lodged with the Police
