The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Jordan, J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara presented credentials to His Majesty King Abdullah ll Ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on 08 March 2023 at the Basman Palace.
The credentials ceremony entailed a ceremonial Guard of Honour and the playing of the National Anthems.
Welcoming the Ambassador to Jordan and wishing her every success in her new assignment, His Majesty King Abdullah ll Ibn Al Hussein expressed the importance of strengthening defense cooperation and recalled the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries.
During the brief meeting, Ambassador Wijegunasekara conveyed the personal greetings and best wishes of President Ranil Wickremesinghe to His Majesty which was warmly reciprocated. The Ambassador highlighted the long-standing bilateral relationship encompassing political ties, trade, tourism, and employment opportunities among others. She also spoke on the importance of tourists from Jordan for the revival of Sri Lanka’s tourism industry and to establish stronger people-to-people contacts.
As part of the Credentials ceremony, Ambassador Wijegunasekara inspected the Guard of Honour at Basman Palace and laid wreaths at the tombs of their Late Majesties King Hussein Bin Talal, King Abdullah I, and King Talal Bin Abdullah.
Wijegunasekara joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service in 2003 and has served in various capacities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sri Lanka Missions. She served as Director General of the Consular Affairs Division of the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka prior to her current assignment.
She holds two master’s degrees in International Relations, and Human Rights & Democratization from the University of Colombo and a third one in Political Science from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka and is a graduate of the University of Peradeniya.
The Ambassador was accompanied to the credential ceremony by Third Secretary, P.A. Rupasinghe of the Embassy.
