The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa celebrated the 67th Anniversary of the Independence on 04th February 2015 at the High Commissioner's residence with the participation of around 150 members of the Sri Lankan community living in Ottawa and Montreal.
The official programme of the event commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Acting High Commissioner Waruna Wilpatha. Playing of the National Anthem was followed by multi-faith religious observances by the Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian priests to evoke blessings for peace and prosperity to Sri Lanka. Reading of the Independence Day Messages of the President, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs were followed by a brief speech by the Acting High Commissioner who spoke on the current developments in Sri Lanka. During the speech, the Acting High Commissioner requested the Sri Lankan expatriate community to shed all differences and extend their fullest corporation to rebuild Sri Lanka and to consolidate the peace.
The notable feature of this year's National Day Celebration was the participation of increased number of Sri Lankan Tamils living in Ottawa and Montreal. The event ended with a reception hosted by the High Commission for the participants.
