The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium hosted Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, and Head of Mission to the European Union Grace Asirwatham for a farewell meeting on 13 December 2023. Present at the event were Director General for Bilateral Affairs Jeroen Cooreman,, Director for Asia and the Pacific Division François Delhaye, and Desk Officer for Sri Lanka Jonathan Broodcoorens.
During the farewell meeting, Ambassador Asirwatham and Director General Cooreman discussed the progress in diplomatic relations between Belgium and Sri Lanka and observed that the convening of the first meeting of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Bilateral Consultations should be expedited, preferably in early next year. Both parties concurred that the operationalization of the MoU on Bilateral Consultations will help comprehensively assess the current bilateral relations and explore new avenues for cooperation in emerging areas of interest.
Further, they agreed to review the bilateral agreements that are outdated and address pending issues, thereby injecting fresh vigor into the existing diplomatic ties. Director General Cooreman appreciated Ambassador Asirwatham’s initiatives for advancing Belgium-Sri Lanka bilateral relations during her tenure in Belgium.
