Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa attends the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction 3-5 November 2016 in New Delhi

Minister of Disaster Management, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa participated at the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction on 3rd November 2016 in New Delhi. The Conference was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India. The Vice Prime Minister of Mongolia and around 35 Ministers and high-level delegates in the field of disaster management and climate change from the United Nations were also present.

Addressing the Ministerial plenary, Minister Yapa said that Sri Lanka is frequently affected by natural disasters and that effects of climate change has resulted in an increase of occurrence and severity in disasters. To address this issue, Sri Lanka has taken several measures to develop a national action plan and the government has already approved and financed over projects over 10 billion rupees under the comprehensive Disaster Management Programme. Minister also said that meaningful implementation of the Sendai Framework will require enhanced technical cooperation among countries and information sharing on assessment and disaster preparedness and recovery.

The Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction was organized by the Government of India in collaboration with United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and adopted a political declaration, Asian Regional Plan for Implementation of the Sendai Framework and a Stakeholder Action Statement for the Asian region by the Conference today (5/11).
