KANDY – Set apart political and other difference and unite to defeat threats from the Western powers, urged the Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkita Mahanayaka Thera of Asgiriya at the ‘Adistana Pujawa’ in front of the Sri Dalada Maligawa yesterday 27.
The ‘Pujawa’ was organised to invoke the blessings of the Sacred Tooth and guardian deties to vanquish any moves at the UNHRC meeting against Sri Lanka.
Addressing the large gathering of members of the Sangha and laymen, led by Governor Tikiri Kobbekkaduwa, Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkita Mahanayaka Thera said what was important at a crucial moment as at present was solidarity in the nation.
The country had overpowered the terrorism that was responsible for the destruction of assets and lives of the people for over 30 years, he said.
He noted that the Western powers, which were not happy with the outcome, were now trying to destabilize the affairs of the country by throwing their weight about. The challenges of those powers could only be defeated by displaying the unity and solidarity of the Sri Lankan nation.
The Western Powers might not be happy over the return of peace to Sri Lanka. The 30-year-old terrorism was defeated by the efforts of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Defence Secretary with commitment of the Security Forces, the prelate added.
The Anunayaka Thero of Malwatta Chapter Most Venerable Dimbulkumbe Wimalabuddhi, representing Most Venerable Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thero, said that the island of Sri Lanka was just regaining lost development after 30 years of terror.
Some world powers were not satisfied with the present freedom and peace enjoyed by the Sri Lanka people and were now resorting to different moves against the country, he said.
The prelate recalled that the terrorists not only attacked the Sri Dalada Maligawa but also destroyed many lives at the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura and killed in cold blood the Sangha and innocent men, women and children.
It was through the commitment of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and War Heroes like Sarath Fonseka that LTTE terrorism was routed out, he said. "Let us now unite to develop this country," he added.
Kandy Mayor Mahendra Ratwatte, members of the Municipal Council Provincial Council Ministers and Pradeshiya Sabha were among those present.
