A peaceful protest was held in Kalmunai town yesterday against the forces conspiring in the UN Human Rights Council against Sri Lanka.

Thousands participated in the protest shouting slogans against the resolution which is to be moved against Sri Lanka by the United States.

Participants representing all communities in the area said they are committed to strengthen the hands of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who brought peace to the country after ending the 30 year scourge of terrorism.

The march was organised by the Eastern Province Civil Society Federation. Addressing the crowd, a coordinator of the Federation Ishwaran Babu said they faced untold hardships at the hands of LTTE terrorists for decades and no country came to their rescue.

"The foreign nations clamouring for rights in Sri Lanka did nothing for the people who were virtually held hostage by the LTTE. What they did was strengthening their coffers by selling arms to the LTTE," he said.

Around 5,000 persons participated in the procession in Kalmunai town. A majority of the participants were Tamils which included women and children. The participants gathered at the Kalmunai Wesley College playground at around 9.00 a.m. from where the two kilometre procession commenced. The children holding photographs of President Rajapaksa and waving national flags walked in the procession. Participants in the procession supported the stand taken by the President against the American resolution submitted in Geneva. They also requested that Kalmunai North be upgraded as Tamil Pradeshiya Secretariat.

The participants shouted slogans such as 'We will join President's forward march', 'The President has won the confidence of the Tamil people' and 'In order to settle the ethnic issue we have strengthened the hands of President.'

Tamils from many villages in the Ampara district participated in the procession.
