A delegation from International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Kuwait led by Mr. Fawzi Al-Zioud, Chief of Mission visited the Embassy on 08th September 2009 accompanied by Ms. Iman Ereiqat, Snr. Admin/Finance and had discussions with the Ambassador and Labour section’s staff with regard to a range of labour issues. Dr. Adel Al-Damkhi, Chairman of the Kuwait Association of the Basic Evaluators for Human Rights also joined the IOM delegation at discussions.

Admin/Finance and had discussions with the Ambassador and Labour section’s staff with regard to a range of labour issues. Dr. Adel Al-Damkhi, Chairman of the Kuwait Association of the Basic Evaluators for Human Rights also joined the IOM delegation at discussions.
The visit by the IOM delegation was in response to a request made by the Ambassador from the IOM delegation during his visit to the IOM office on 13th August 2009 together with Mr. D.M.P.B. Dissanayake/Counsellor. On that occasion the two sides discussed labour issues, IOM assistance with air tickets to repatriate illegal Sri Lankans, concerns of migrant workers with regard to non-payment of salary, lack of health, sanitary & medication services, violence & other forms of physical harassments by sponsors etc.
As part of their commitments, IOM delegation and Dr. Adel Al-Damkhi assured their fullest support to expedite some labour cases which are long outstanding. In particular, the plight of Sri Lankan mother and her three children born out of wedlock, has been taken up as a priority case. On hearing this pathetic story, the IOM delegation took immediate action to bring this matter to the notice of the concerned authorities which prompted them to arrange urgent relief and assistance to the affected parties as a humanitarian gesture. The IOM delegation also offered to intervene with the authorities concerned so as to facilitate assistance with regard to providing legal services, compensation, counseling and other support services required by the migrant labour from Sri Lanka.
Ambassador appreciated the cooperation and support extended by IOM Delegation in Kuwait to the Sri Lankan Embassy, which have been of great benefit towards providing relief and assistance to the Sri Lankan migrant workers in Kuwait with regard to their labour problems and other issues. The IOM delegation praised the Labour Section staff for the efficient manner in which they have been permeag their tasks and for the invaluable services rendered to the migrant workers.
