High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom Rohitha Bogollagama facilitated discussions between the executive members of the Sri Lanka Leukemia Foundation-UK (SLLFUK) and selected members of the Sri Lankan business, professional and community organizations, at a meeting of the Advisory Council of Sri Lanka’s Interests of the High Commission, on 25 October 2024.
During the meeting, High Commissioner Bogollagama introduced the SLLFUK to the rest of the participants and encouraged council members to support the SLLFUK’s cause. In his remarks, the High Commissioner stated “I want to propagate this foundation from the UK. It has been there for nearly 20 years, and when I met them at a fund-raising event, I thought we have to give them a greater opportunity to raise funds out of the UK to benefit Leukemia patients back in Sri Lanka”.“ For that purpose I thought of bringing them to interact with our colleagues here and then we can gradually expand the fund-raising process”, he added.
At the meeting SLLFUK President Subi Perera, together with former President of the foundation Dr. Narada Wijeythilake presented on the foundation including its history, mission, and strategic vision etc. She further highlighted its plans to obtain the involvement of the wide Sri Lankan community in the UK through the £1 campaign, and outlined the efforts to reach corporate bodies for fundraising support.
As a token gesture, the High Commissioner donated sales proceeds from Ceylon Tea and Sri Lanka handcrafts featured at the Sri Lanka Stand organized by the High Commission at the Bedford River Festival held on 20 and 21 July 2024. The gesture marked the beginning of the charity engagements with corporate and professional bodies across the UK.
