High Commissioner Kananathan participates in Vesak day celebrations at Uganda Buddhist Centre

 At the invitation of the chief incumbent of Uganda Buddhist Centre in Entebbe, Venerable Bhante Buddharakkhita, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Uganda Veluppillai Kananathan attended the Vesak day celebrations at the Centre on 26 May, 2021.  The Uganda Buddhist Centre, the only Buddhist Centre in Uganda which is located in a six acre land adjoining the Lake Victoria area is run by an African monk for more than 16 years. Over the years the Centre has been recognised for its divine mandate to propagate the teachings of Lord Buddha within the context of African culture and supported expanding its infrastructure and outreach to the community.

The Vesak day programme at Uganda Buddhist Centre included ordination of 12 Ugandan novice monks, Buddha pooja, meditation, inauguration of a new Sanga building and tree planting. High Commissioner Kananathan and His Majesty the Kyabazinga of Busoga William Nadiope IV of a constitutional kingdom in modern-day Uganda graced the occasion as special invitees to the event and jointly  inaugurated the new Sanga building. High Commissioner Kananathan in his address commended the determined service by Venerable Bhante Buddharakkhita to establish the Buddhist Center in Uganda to share the universal message of love and peace of Lord Buddha and to help the needy people in the community. The High Commissioner further remarked that while the whole world was affected by COVID-19 pandemic, the Lord Buddha’s timeless message of unity and service to others had become even more relevant and important than ever.

A large number of invitees including high-ranking officials, devotees and guests attended the important function organized to commemorate the Vesak day in Uganda.
